Visas, passports and other documents
Please check Poland’s official tourism website to see whether you require a Visa or other supporting documents for your visit: https://www.gov.pl/web/mswia-en/entry-and-residence-conditions-for-foreign-nationals-in-poland
Currency
The currency in Poland is the złoty (zł / PLN).
Weather
In April, expect average highs of around 14°C and lows of 3°C. It can feel quite cool at this time of year, and occasional snowfall is possible, so we recommend bringing warm layers, especially if you plan to explore the city. A mix of sunshine and showers is also likely, so packing an umbrella is advised.
Clothing
For WEO conferences, we suggest business-casual dress, and for the social programme we recommend smart-casual, unless otherwise stated.
Safety and useful contacts
Warsaw is a relatively safe city, with relatively low levels of crime. However, as with any city, be sure to watch your bags on public transit and in public spaces, and stick to well-lit streets when walking alone at night.
Emergency services: The emergency telephone number is 112. It is free to call. The emergency services can track the location of the call, and there is a tele-translation service in multiple languages.
Electricity
In Warsaw, the standard electricity supply is 230V with a frequency of 50Hz, using type E power plugs and sockets.
Tipping
Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory. However, it’s customary to leave 10-15% in restaurants for good service. Tipping is at your discretion in coffee shops and casual cafes.
Language
The official language in Warsaw is Polish, although English is widely spoken. Tourist establishments and attractions will almost always cater to English-speaking visitors, though learning a few basic Polish phrases is always appreciated:
Good morning/day – Dzień dobry
Thank you – Dziękuję
Goodbye (formal) – Do widzenia
Please/Here you go/You’re welcome – Proszę
