Visas, passports and other documents

Currency

The currency in Colombia is the Peso ($).

Weather

In September, Cartagena, Colombia typically experiences hot and humid weather. Temperatures usually range from around 25 to 32° C. It is also the rainy season, so you can expect some rainfall, but usually in short bursts rather than prolonged periods. Overall, it will be hot and tropical, so make sure to wear suitable clothing, seek shade during the day and stay hydrated.

Clothing

For WEO conferences, we suggest business-casual dress, and for the social programme we recommend smart-casual, unless otherwise stated. Please keep in mind that Cartagena will be hot and humid, although conference sessions will be held in an air-conditioned room.

Sunday 7 September – ‘Bienvenida Caribeña’ Drinks Reception. ‘Colourful Caribbean Smart-Casual’. We encourage bright, colourful outfits with a touch of formality e.g. loose trousers, dresses or skirts.

Monday 8 September – ‘Encanto de Colombia’ Drinks Reception by Vetanco. ‘Vibrant & Light Smart-Casual’. This venue can get hot & humid, so we recommend lightweight, breathable fabrics and colourful attire to match Cartagena’s tropical charm e.g. loose trousers, dresses or skirts.

Wednesday 10 September – ‘La Gran Fiesta Final’ by Hy-Line International, Ovotherm, & US Poultry & Egg Association. ‘All-White Cocktail Party’. We invite all guests to wear cocktail outfits based on the colour white, perfect for an evening of food, dancing and carnival celebrations.

We suggest no shorts, flip-flops or jeans.

Safety and useful contacts

Cartagena, Colombia is generally considered a safe place; however, as with all tourist destinations, it’s important to remain vigilant and avoid leaving expensive items unattended. Pickpockets often target airports, train stations, and busy tourist sites, so we recommend exercising caution and sticking to well-populated tourist areas to ensure your personal safety.

Emergency services: To contact ambulance or police call 123, to contact fire call 119 from any phone.

Electricity

Volts: The standard voltage in Colombia is 110V at a frequency of 60Hz.

Electric plug/adaptors: Power plug types A and B are used in Colombia (these are plugs with two parallel flat pins, common throughout North America).

Tipping

Tipping is not generally expected in Colombia though it is always appreciated. In smaller cafes and restaurants, and for taxi journeys, it is good practice to round up to the nearest thousand pesos. In high-end restaurants, a 10-15% tip is expected, and this may be automatically added to your bill.
